Scottsdale rallies to stun Lady Tiger volleyball team at national tourney

Seven hours after finishing off a win over 14th-seeded Bismarck State College in its opening match of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament played Thursday in Cedar Rapids, IA, the third-seeded Cowley College volleyball team was upset by sixth-seeded Scottsdale Community College (AZ) 25-20, 25-20, 25-27, 20-25, 16-18. With the loss, the best Cowley can finish at the national tournament is fifth place.

The Lady Tigers (39-4) will face seventh-seed Kirkwood Community College (IA) today at 2:30 p.m. with a chance to advance to the fifth-place match that will be played Saturday at 2 p.m.

On Thursday, with the hopes of advancing to the semifinals and eventually getting back to the national title match, Cowley looked poised to win its second match of the day as they won the first two sets against the Artichokes. The Lady Tigers had two match-point opportunities in set three before Scottsdale rallied for the 27-25 win.

With set four tied at 13-13, Scottsdale rattled off three straight points and did not trail again in the 25-20 victory.

In the fifth and final set, Cowley again had two match points they could not convert, and the Artichokes scored six of the last eight points to come all the way back for the five-set victory.

Scottsdale (25-1) advances to the semifinals, where they will face second-seeded Parkland College (IL) Friday at 6:30 p.m. The winner of Friday's match will advance to Saturday's national championship, which will be played at 5:30 p.m.

Freshman Anna Kiss led four Lady Tigers in double figures in kills with 23 kills and 13 digs. Vivianna Solis added a season-high 65 assists in the defeat.
