The top honor among all Two-Year college athletes, the AVCA National Player of the Year award, will reside in Arkansas City, Kansas as Cowley outside hitter Laura Bonomi captures the honor this season. The award is among all divisions of Two-Year colleges in the nation – NJCAA DI, NJCAA DII, NJCAA DIII, CCCAA, and NWAC. The top players of each division were sent to a committee who then selects the player for the award. This is the second honor for a player in Cowley history with the first being Roslandy Acosta in 2010.
Bonomi was part of the Nation's top offense with the NJCAA DII's best 15.06 kills per set and a .338 hitting percentage. Her 560 total kills ranked 5th Nationally, her 4.48 ranked 7th Nationally, her 660 total points ranked her 4th Nationally, and her 5.3 points per set ranked her 9th Nationally. Bonomi finishes her Cowley career as one of the most decorated players in Cowley history with a resume that includes being a two-time NJCAA National Champion, the 2024 NJCAA and AVCA National Player of the Year, 2023 Volleyballmag.com Player of the Year, 2024 NJCAA DII National Tournament Most Valuable Player, a two-time NJCAA First Team All-American, two-time AVCA First Team All-American, VolleyballMag.com All-American, two-time First Team All-District, two-time First Team All-Conference, 2024 KJCCC Conference Most Valuable Player, and 2023 KJCCC Conference Freshman of the year.
Bonomi led Cowley to equal success on the court. The Lady Tigers finished 81-0 in her two seasons in her two seasons at Cowley, the best two-year record in NJCAA history. The 81-win streak is a NJCAA record and the teams back-to-back undefeated is a first in NJCAA history. Of the 81 wins the past two seasons, 74 were 3-0 sweeps, 26 came against Nationally ranked opponents, and the team only lost 10 sets. Cowley won back-to-back National championships, increasing their total to four National Championships which ties them with Parkland for second all-time in NJCAA DII play.
"It's an incredible honor to be named the AVCA Player of the Year. This recognition wouldn't be possible without my amazing teammates, coaches, and the community that always supported us along the way" Bonomi said. "The last two years at Cowley were amazing, I'm so grateful for the opportunities, challenges, and memories that made me grow and improve both on and off the court. I'll always be thankful and glad for these moments and for the people who made them special and taught me the importance of giving your 100% every day and always following your dreams."
