Diaz-Lopez breaks record that had stood since 2006

Already the school-record holder in the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter run, Cowley College sophomore Adrian Diaz-Lopez continued to etch his name into the history books as he broke the school-record in the mile-run held Saturday at the Washburn University All-Kansas Meet in Topeka, KS.

Diaz-Lopez's national qualifying time of 4:07.30 eclipsed the previous school-record of 4:08.60 set by Daniel Maina in 2006.

"Any time you can break the record of a Hall of Famer you are really saying something," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "Adrian is quietly putting together one of the most impressive resumes in Cowley distance history."

Diaz Lopez also hit the national qualifying mark in the 800-meter run as did fellow sophomore Goran Duijsters.

"We are significantly better than when we opened the season and are starting to get our racing shape back," Rieth said.

The Tiger men placed sixth out of 12 teams, while the Lady Tigers finished ninth. The Wichita State University men and women's track and field teams placed first at the meet.

The Lady Tigers were led by freshman Arantxa Cortez hitting the national qualifying mark in the pole vault. Cowley throwers Alejandra Handie, Bernesha Knowles, and Chloe Wilson also performed well and just missed hitting the national qualifying standards in their respective events.

The Tiger track and field teams will now prepare to take part in the Wendy's Pittsburg State University Invitational Saturday at 8 a.m.

"It is good to be competing," Rieth said. "We will continue to use these meets as workouts. The best way for us to get in shape is to compete."
