Tiger track and field teams do well at Shocker Spring Invite

The nationally ranked Cowley College men and women's track and field teams took its largest squads of the season to compete at the Shocker Spring Invite held Friday and Saturday in Wichita, KS.

"It was good to introduce some of our athletes to new events and get the rust off," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said.

The Tiger men were led by sophomore Goran Duijsters placing eighth in the 1,500-meter run with a national qualifying time of 4:00.05. Duijsters' time was a 12-second personal best.

Also hitting the national qualifying mark in the javelin was Conner Kaplinger. The freshman from Lewiston, Maine placed third in the event with a mark of 167-6.

"Conner had a really good performance in the javelin, even while competing on a bum ankle," Rieth said.

Fellow freshman Felipe Mentz also competed well and placed fifth in the javelin with a mark of 158-1.

Leading the Lady Tiger athletes at the meet were the performances of hammer throwers Chloe Wilson, Kayla McClellan and Bernesha Knowles, who placed fourth, sixth and seventh with national qualifying throws.

Cowley will now prepare to compete at the Friends University Open at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday in Wichita, KS.

"It will be good to run outside again and deal with any elements we may face," Rieth said. "Our main goal is to keep improving."
